ALI: CORRUPT CUSTOM OFFICERS TO FACE 10 YEARS IN JAIL

Any officer of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) who is found to be corrupt will be jailed for 10 years. These are the words of of  the Comptroller General of Customs (CGC), Colonel Hameed Ali (retired). Though the law provides for a five years jail term, Ali said the move to jail corrupt officers was meant to serve as a deterrent to others.

Ali, made this known in Sokoto while addressing men and officers of NCS in Sokoto/Zamfara/Kebbi Area Command, He warned that that any customs officer caught involved in any corrupt practice would not be spared.

The Controller general of custom, who gave the same warning when he made his maiden visit to NCS formations in Lagos and its environs last month, stated that he would do everything at all cost to fulfill the mission given to him by President Muhammadu Buhari.

“The minimum jail term for corrupt officers is five years, but I will make sure that any officer found to be corrupt gets the maximum jail term of 10 years. This is to serve as a deterrent to any officer who finds himself in the Customs to make money and not to earn money. I am not saying that there are no good, incorruptible officers in the service, but there are few bad eggs who are giving the service a bad name," he maintained.

Ali cautioned them against indiscipline and living above their means.
While advising men and officers of NCS to make integrity, honesty and transparency their watchwords, the retired military officer said: “Our work ethics must change to be in tune with the change mantra as championed by President Muhammadu Buhari. You should all do this to minimize the chances of getting into trouble, except those who are criminally minded."

He explained that the task before him was to reform the service, raise revenue, and improve the welfare of personnel.

Well said. I hope the NCS will adhere and follow due process in ensuring prompt and excellent service delivery to the general populace. Do you think Colonel Hameed Ali (retired). can make this happen ?
