Nigeria Has Highest Percentage of People Living in Poverty - PWC

The lack of an efficient and resilient financial system is still holding back inclusive and sustainable growth in emerging markets across the globe including Nigeria, a global financial and economy consultant, PwC Project Blue, has stated in its recent findings.

The financial expert also said that Nigeria had the highest percentage of its population living in poverty, with its financial system showing the least progress of all the seven emerging markets: Nigeria, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico and South Africa.

Barcelona won’t put their financial future at risk in negotiating a new contract for Lionel Messi, the club warned on Wednesday, in comments that will encourage his many suitors across Europe, AFP reports.

Messi and club captain Andres Iniesta are entering the final 18 months of their current deals at the Camp Nou meaning they would be free to talk to other clubs in a year’s time if they don’t extend their contracts in 2017.



China Disclose Plans to Invest $40bn in Nigeria

Wang Yi, Chinese Foreign Affairs Minister, has disclosed plans by the Chinese government to invest up to $40b in Nigeria as part of efforts aimed at deepening relations between the two countries.

The amount, which was announced by the minister during a joint briefing with his Nigerian counterpart yesterday in Abuja was in addition to other contributions China had made to Nigeria to support her developmental activities. He said his country had invested about $45b in various projects in Nigeria and is at the verge of releasing another $40b.



CBN approves N1 Billion for SMEs in Imo State

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has approved of the sum of N1 billion soft loan for the Imo State Government for disbursement to the operators of Micro Small and Medium Scale businesses in the state, out of N2 billion applied for in 2014.

Also, the state is expecting the N9 billion approved of by the CBN last year for the states’ Anchor Borrower’s rice project scheduled to commence in full scale first quarter of this year.



PH, Kaduna, Warri Refineries Resume Kerosene, Diesel production - NNPC

NIGERIAN National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, yesterday, announced that the Kaduna, Port Harcourt and Warri refineries had resumed production of Dual Purpose Kerosene, DPK, and Automotive Gas Oil, AGO, otherwise known as kerosene and diesel respectively. Similarly, Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas, NLNG, blamed the current scarcity and high cost of Liquefied Petroleum Gas, LPG, nationwide on the inability of its LPG vessel to berth and discharge its contents at the Apapa ports since December 29, 2016, due to congestion of the port facility. 



Senate Rejects Banning of Importation of Vehicles through Land Borders

The Senate has called for the reversal of the Federal Government policy banning the importation of vehicles into the country through land borders. According to the Senate, the ban, which took effect on January 1, 2017, will lead to the loss of about 500,000 jobs.

The lawmakers, who criticised the policy during plenary on Wednesday, described the ban as anti-poor.



Nigeria’ll get out of recession this year – W’Bank

The World Bank has predicted that Nigeria will get out of recession and grow its Gross Domestic Product by one per cent this year after plunging into its worst recession in over two decades. The bank said in a statement on Wednesday, “Sub-Saharan African growth is expected to pick up modestly to 2.9 per cent in 2017 as the region continues to adjust to lower commodity prices.

“Growth in South Africa and oil exporters is expected to be weaker, while growth in economies that are not natural-resource intensive should remain robust.

DSS Arrests Fleeing Boko Haram Suspects in Lagos

Department of State Services confirmed to pressmen in Abuja that it had arrested four suspected members of the Boko Haram sect at Oko-Oba area of Agege in Lagos State. 

A statement signed by the spokesperson for the service, Mr. Tony Opuiyo, in Abuja,the suspects who fled to lagos to evade arrest in the North - East were apprehended on Tuesday.

He gave the names of the suspects as Fanayi Hassan, Butame Hassan, Kologoni Bukar and Amina Abubakar.

To kick off 2017, The Weeknd leads the pack on Billboard’s 200 albums chart. Along with the Moana soundtrack, projects from Bruno Mars, Drake and J. Cole help round out the Top 5 despite a drop in sales.

The Weeknd returns to his throne with Starboy jumping to the top spot in its sixth week on the chart with 69,408 equivalent album units. It debuted at #1 back in December and only lasted a week before J. Cole’s 4 Your Eyez Only came barging in. Even though Starboy moved up the chart this sales cycle, it actually had a 26 percent decrease in sales.

Oil marketers under the aegis of the Independent Petroleum Products Importers have said they owe some Nigerian banks over $1bn used for the importation of petroleum products, with accumulated interest of N160bn.

They said the interest had accumulated because the government could not pay them or pay the banks’ interest on the loans as agreed, adding that the inability to pay or service the loans had stalled the importation of fuel.
